This beautiful fragmentary mosaic from the Roman period depicts a mallard duck. We can see its head and beak, as well as part of its body. Mosaic is an ancestral art, consisting in the union of cubic fractions of stone (marble or vitreous paste), called tesserae.
In shades of green, ochre and orange, the visible part of the duck is central; beautifully detailed, the duck surprises us with its piercing gaze, thanks to a black pupil. We also see a round geometric shape, depicting a sun with its rays; this geometric shape is created in a fade of colors, from ochre to green, with orange-yellow at its center. Green lines fill the empty areas of the mosaic.
Remarkably elegant and pure, this timeless mosaic is characterized by unrivalled refinement and harmony.
